    The model approval is intended to verify the conformity of equipment (a measuring instrument) to the relevant regulatory requirements.

    The regulatory requirements are laid down in Royal Decrees which, in some cases, are the transposition of European directives.

    The objective is to verify, through tests and checks, that the proposed prototype fulfils these requirements prior to placing equipment on the market for serial production based on the evaluated prototype.

    National model approvals

    For measuring instruments not covered by a European directive (non-harmonised regulations), only the Model Approvals Department is authorised to issue model approvals; these national approvals are only valid on the Belgian territory. National approvals issued by other countries are not automatically accepted but can sometimes serve as a basis for issuing Belgian national approvals.
