Are you the holder of an intellectual property right and do you, as an entrepreneur or future entrepreneur, want to make the best possible use of your right to secure funding?

Are you wondering under which conditions you can use your intellectual property rights as collateral to obtain funding?

Are you about to enter into a contractual agreement and need financing to do so? Would you therefore like to better assess the financial value of your intellectual property right?

The answers to these questions can be found in the “Practical Guide to Valorise Intellectual Property with the Goal to Raise Funds”.

    Why a Guide?

Our econometric study of 2022 has shown that SMEs are the motor of our economy, both in terms of employment and of productivity. Every SME needs finance from startup to its growing phase. Finance is generally granted based on balance sheet figures or the entrepreneur’s assets. The company’s intellectual property rights (IPR) are definitely part of it. The econometric study illustrated that companies with IPR perform better than those without. Therefore, intelligent IP asset management by SMEs, and in general the valorisation of IP in Belgium, is crucial for the growth and the competitiveness of our SMEs.

The "Practical Guide to Valorise Intellectual Property with the Goal to Raise Funds " was developed by the FPS Economy. It’s main goal is to inform Belgian companies about various strategies of valorising their intellectual property .

    Key Topics

Available in English, French and Dutch, the guide provides an overview of the four main approaches that exist for accessing finance through intellectual property rights in Belgium:

    • Securing subsidies for intellectual property and for research and development (R&D)
    • Existing tax benefits
    • Using IP to raise funds through a loan or equity financing
    • Different sources of direct income

The guide also provides a series of recommendations based on those that exist in other countries, and on how SMEs can use their IP assets to access suitable financing options.

Finally, a FAQ addresses a number of principal questions that SMEs can ask in relation to the valorisation of their IP. The guide also includes a list of important contacts for SMEs to navigate the formalities involved in IP valorisation.
