Penalties

The owner, the keeper or the driver of a motor vehicle, who puts it into circulation without being covered by a civil liability car insurance policy, may be sanctioned by one or more penalties (article 22 et seq. of the law of 21 November 1989):

  • a fine;
  • a prison sentence ranging from 8 days to 6 months;
  • a temporary driving ban ranging from 8 days to 5 years or a permanent disqualification;
  • the confiscation of the vehicle.

The keeper and driver of the vehicle are liable to sanctions, if they are aware that the vehicle is not covered by civil liability car insurance.

Compensation in the event of an accident

In the event of an accident where you are at fault and/or with weak users, as the owner of an uninsured vehicle, you will have to reimburse all of the sums paid to the victims.

In the case of an accident involving personal injury, compensation costs are often very high.

Always take out compulsory civil liability insurance for your vehicle!
