The construction products’ market includes many different intermediate products, intended to be incorporated into construction works in a permanent manner, such as buildings, bridges, and roads.
Examples of such products are:
- bricks,
- concrete components,
- polymers,
- tiles,
- mosaics,
- beams,
- doors,
- windows, and
- sanitary appliances.
Construction works must meet basic requirements for the duration of their life cycle and during an "economically reasonable" life span.
To meet these requirements, it is essential to guarantee the performance of the products used, regardless of whether it concerns:
- buildings (private houses, building, etc.), or
- civil engineering constructions (bridges, roads, dams, etc.).
Legal framework
Construction products are subject to Regulation (EU) 305/2011, in effect since 1 July 2013.
Regulation (EU) 305/2011 lays down the rules to market construction products and creates a common language (harmonised technical specifications), to assess the performance of construction products. It also defines the rules for affixing the CE marking.
In December 2024, the European Union adopted Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 , which revises Regulation (EU) 305/2011. The application of that new text will be gradual, as the two regulations will coexist until 2040.
