Supply licence

The supply of electricity in Belgium through the transmission grid by intermediaries and suppliers is subject to a licence.

Licences to supply electricity to customers located in Belgium connected to the transmission grid or to a direct line whose nominal voltage exceeds 70,000 volts are issued by the Federal Minister of Energy.

Applications for supply licences must be addressed to the Commission for Electricity and Gas Regulation (CREG).

For electricity supply through the distribution grid, please consult:

  • for Brussels: BRUGEL;
  • for Flanders: VREG;
  • for Wallonia: CWaPE.

Belgian power exchange

The Belgian power exchange is a centralised platform that allows electricity trading between buyers and sellers. On this platform, electricity volumes are traded between different actors (producers, suppliers, large industrial consumers, etc.).

The Belgian power exchange was created as a result of the liberalisation of the European electricity market.

In 2006, EPEX SPOT Belgium (formerly Belpex) was appointed to organise and manage the electricity exchange.
