The licence plate is an essential element of identification in many of your insurance policies.

Therefore, when the insurance policy and/or the cover stipulates the licence plate as an identifying element, the reference of your new - European - number plate should be communicated to your insurer(s).

Indeed, if you contact your insurer's notification centre - for example, in the context of assistance insurance - mentioning your new licence plate which is not yet in its file, you will experience difficulties that will delay the intervention of the insurer and it will clearly have an impact on your satisfaction level.

Policies that are generally likely to stipulate the licence plate as an identifying feature include:

  1. civil liability car insurance;
    From an insurance perspective, your new vehicle with your old licence plates is automatically covered for a period of 16 days from the sale of your old vehicle. In order for your new vehicle to be insured under its new plates, the insurance policy must stipulate this;
  2. travel and assistance insurance;
  3. driver's insurance;
  4. fire insurance sometimes mentions parked vehicles covered by the licence plate (check it out!).
