This publication, drawn up by the Directorate General for Energy, provides an overview of the latest available data on the energy market in Belgium.

The Directorate General for Energy produces and publishes energy statistics by economic sector and by energy source every year. These statistics provide an overview of the quantities of energy produced, marketed and consumed and of their evolution over time. They also make it possible to evaluate energy and environmental policy, quantify the impact of policy measures, monitor the evolution of the percentage of renewable energy in the energy mix and gain a better understanding of Belgium's energy dependence and security of supply.

See the Energy in figures section for more information.

For the most part, these statistics are in response to obligations imposed by the European Union under Regulation (EC) 1099/2008 on energy statistics and Regulation (EU) 2016/1952 on European statistics on gas and electricity prices. The Directorate General for Energy is part of the European Statistical System (ESS), a partnership that brings together Eurostat (the statistical office of the European Union) and the national services that produce European statistics (national statistical offices and other national authorities).

These statistics are therefore compiled in accordance with European definitions and the standards and principles adopted by the ESS. The application of these standards and principles is regularly reviewed by independent European experts, called "peers". The last peer review was held in December 2021.
