Documentation : The European Trade Economist Network

The European Trade Economist Network (TEN) is a voluntary informal network of economists working on trade related issues in the governments of the Member States and in the Commission.

The TEN has existed since 2001. The purpose of the TEN is to have a forum where economists can freely discuss current trade policy issues, based on their own analysis or papers by academics, without being concerned about sensitivities related to national policies. What is being discussed is not taken outside the network. The idea is to share knowledge and learn from each other. Issues that were discussed are f.i.:

  • trade in added value;
  • external aspects of competitiveness;
  • benefits of FTA’s
  • trade defense instruments….

All these topics are still sensitive political issues.

The members meet twice a year for one-day meetings. Meetings are hosted on a voluntary basis by the members. Last time it was held in Madrid, this time it will be in Brussels. Other times it has been in The Hague, Prague, London, Austria, Spain, Germany, Sweden etc.  Members pay their own travel costs. Attendance is voluntary.

Usually, there are around 20 participants and we have very good and fruitful discussions. This is also supported by very positive feedback from members and from the fact that the TEN has now existed 9 years. In addition to meeting twice a year, the TEN also has a secure web site through which the members can communicate with each other and upload analysis or other information they wish to share.

The network is open for new members at any time and interested economists can register on the web site http://trade.ec.europa.eu/economist/

The TEN is managed by Marlene Rosemarie Madsen (marlene.madsen@ec.europa.eu, +32 2295 34 17) in DG Trade's Chief Economist Unit. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact her.

The Federal Public Service (FPS) Economy participates actively in the discussions of TEN.  In order to underpin positions in trade questions, the FPS has created a network of academics from all the Belgian universities.

A TEN meeting took place on the 1st of July 2010 in Brussels and because the sponsorship of the FPS some of the economists attended the European Business Summit on 30th of June as well.
