Designs

For its creator, the appearance of a product plays a strategic role. Between two products of the same quality, the consumer is likely to choose the most aesthetic one.

This is the reason why many companies or designers choose to protect the external aspect of their products by registering them as designs.

A design right grants the right holder exclusive rights over this external aspect.

The protection of a design within Belgian territory can be obtained via Benelux design right (which covers the territory of the three Benelux countries: Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) from the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP).

This protection is governed by the Benelux Convention on Intellectual Property.
