Acces
Retrait et restitution des ouvrages via l’Infoshop (Rue du Progès 48): lundi au vendredi de 9 h à 17 h.
Consultation de la collection patrimoniale: sur rendez-vous.
From 1 January 2011, the library’s reading room is closed to the public. Books from the past ten years can be borrowed from the Infoshop on the ground floor. Loan requests can be made by e-mail, telephone or fax (see above). Users will be notified of when they can come to collect the books they have requested.
Anyone wanting to borrow books must have a library card. This is free of charge.
Articles and chapters from books can be provided in electronic format, provided they are only used for personal study.
Books which form part of the heritage collection (own publications, books on the life and work of Adolphe Quetelet, publications unique to Belgium) can be viewed by appointment.
Libraries can also request books via interlibrary loan.
After granting public access to its reading room for 170 years, the Quetelet Fund Library will be moving towards a modern remote service, where information can be accessed in a more flexible way.
The history of the Quetelet Fund Library dates back to the middle of the 19th century!
Everything started in 1841 with the creation of the Central Statistics Commission by Adolphe Quetelet.
And just before the start of the World War II, the Central Library of the Ministry of Economic Affairs was founded.
The project of merging the two libraries was delayed by the war, but succeeded in 1945: the Central Library of Economic Affairs acquired the Fund of the Central Statistics Commission Library.
This new library would become one of the most important in Europe in the field of statistics and economics. Today it is called the Quetelet Fund Library in honour of the famous Belgian statistician.
Its long history has not prevented it from keeping up with the latest advances: starting in 1969, the library became computerised and it was one of the first to offer free internet access to its users as well as access to data both on-line and on CD-ROM!
The Quetelet Fund Library has also faced some important challenges: in 2005, it organised a massive move and coordinated a merger project with the other libraries of FPS Economy, namely the library of the National Institute of Statistics (INS) and the Federal Agricultural Library.
The Quetelet Fund Library always remains up-to-date with recent technology, while never losing sight of its rich history: the integration of old books into the digital library catalogue (with some works dating back to the late 18th century!), the digitalisation of books, and the restoration of precious works are all scheduled soon.
