Construction products

In many cases, construction products are not end products but intermediate products used for construction works.

These construction works must meet a number of essential requirements regarding:

  • strength and stability;
  • fire safety;
  • hygiene, health and environment;
  • safe operation;
  • noise protection;
  • energy efficiency and thermal insulation.

To meet these requirements, it is important to be sure of the features of the construction products used.

CE marking

The CE mark is not affixed to all construction products.

A manufacturer must affix the CE mark where there is a harmonised standard for their product, from a specific date.

A manufacturer can also affix the CE mark to other construction products. To do so, they must hold a European Technical Approval (ETA) .

The CE mark indicates that the performance of a construction product’s features was established in a manner accepted at European level, so that the product can be trusted and be freely traded within the European market

Producers’ obligations

To be able to affix the CE mark to a construction product, there must be a manufacturer’s declaration of conformity for the product.

Confirming the conformity of a product means:

  • that the manufacturer has a production control system at their factory;
  • that for certain products an evaluation is conducted by a Notified Body (testing laboratory, certification body or inspection body);

The evaluation system to use for a product is specified by the European Commission after consultation with the Standing Committee on Construction and is binding on the producer
